Maths around us!

07/06/2022

Have you ever wondered how to get your child interested in mathematics? Or maybe you're tired of the endless "why" and want some peace? Activities below will help you to keep your sanity and encourage kids to practise maths.

What's this?
Luckily, math will give you everything you need! It is not only in receipts and discounts, it is everywhere, you just need to look closely. Everything around is made of shapes, even your house. How many different shapes can you find?

Let's take a rectangle as an example. Walls, doors, windows, floor, ceiling, door frame, and even window sill are usually made of rectangles. And if you look closer you can also count the glass. And if you have modern windows, then there may even be three or four layers of glass.

It's not just about counting the shapes, but about explaining your thinking and paying attention to the units of measurement. It will also help in the development of spatial thinking and would give your child the basics of architecture.

How far?

If you are too lazy to count shapes and don’t have the strength to focus on mathematical operations but still want to keep your child busy with something, then you can try estimates. Choose a goal and estimate the distance. Providing your kid with steps counting app on the phone will spare you from any trouble.

How to?
Another everyday game is aimed at working with numbers. First, you need to choose a number: the house number, the number of the car in front, or the age of the grandmother is quite suitable. After picking a number, you need to think about different ways to get the number.

For example, if nana is 72 years old. How can you get the number 72?

71+1

35.5 x 2

142 ÷ 2

Older kids can work with decimals, exponentials, and roots.

It all depends on your imagination!
